Growing food sustainably and efficiently

By 2050, the earth’s population is predicted to be 9 billion – and 80 percent of all food will be consumed in cities. This growing urban population will need access to healthy and nutritious food. On top of that, it is estimated that we will need to produce double the amount of food with half the resources of today – leaving us with one of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Water, fertilisers, land and energy are all crucial resources for food production. Less than one percent of the earth’s fresh water is easily available and suitable for human use – and 70 percent of that water is used for irrigation in agriculture. Reserves of fertilisers that are necessary for traditional food production are running out. Continuous and increasing demand on land resources has negatively impacted the quality of land available for food production.

Flexible food production with Grodan

In places where agricultural land is scarce, new and innovative forms of food production hold the key to feeding city dwelling populations. Grodan hydroponics can be sited anywhere, including in urban areas that would otherwise be completely unsuitable for traditional soil-based production.

Professional growers use Grodan to produce fresh vegetables in a highly efficient way, using less water, fertiliser, and pesticides than soil-based solutions. Food produced on Grodan growing media uses 50 percent less water, while achieving 75 percent more yield – and it requires far less land, meaning it can be produced locally, reducing transportation.
